About

Dambulla sits at a crossroads in central Sri Lanka, making it a natural transit point for travelers moving between different parts of the island. The town itself is functional rather than scenic—it’s primarily a commercial center serving the surrounding agricultural region. The main north-south highway passes through Dambulla, connecting Colombo to the northern districts. The area has been significant for over 2,000 years, partly due to its location and partly because of the cave temple. King Valagamba took refuge in the caves in the 1st century BCE when exiled from Anuradhapura, and after regaining power, he had the caves converted into temples. The site has been expanded and maintained continuously since then. Dambulla’s position makes it a practical base for exploring the Cultural Triangle. Anuradhapura lies about 70 kilometers north, Polonnaruwa roughly 75 kilometers northeast, and Kandy about 70 kilometers south. Sigiriya, the most visited site in the region, is just a 20-minute drive away. The town has grown significantly in recent decades to support both agriculture and tourism. You’ll find a full range of accommodation from budget guesthouses to mid-range hotels, most located along the main highway or on side roads leading to Sigiriya. The food scene caters to tourists with both local and international options available.

Planing Your Visit

Many travelers use Dambulla as a base for exploring the Cultural Triangle rather than staying in smaller Sigiriya. The town offers more choice in accommodation and dining, and the location works well for day trips to surrounding sites. Most visitors spend one to two nights here, though the cave temple itself can be seen in a half-day visit.
