Udawalawe sits in the southern lowlands of Sri Lanka, in Sabaragamuwa Province. The area is transitional between the wet zone to the south and the dry zone to the east, resulting in a semi-arid climate with scrub and grassland as the dominant vegetation. Temperatures are typically hot, often reaching into the low to mid-30s Celsius. The national park was established in 1972, shortly after the reservoir was completed. The creation of the dam and reservoir displaced both wildlife and human communities. The park provides habitat for animals that lost range to the flooding, and elephant numbers have grown significantly since the park’s creation. Unlike some of Sri Lanka’s older national parks, Udawalawe never served as a royal hunting reserve or had other historical significance—it exists purely for wildlife conservation and watershed protection. The open terrain and guaranteed elephant sightings have made it increasingly popular with visitors over the past two decades. The town of Udawalawe itself is small and mainly serves local agricultural communities and park visitors. Accommodation options have grown to meet demand from tourists, with several safari camps and hotels located near the park entrance. The town has basic services but limited dining or entertainment options—most visitors spend their time either in the park or relaxing at their accommodation. Udawalawe’s location between the hill country and the southern coast makes it a natural stop on routes connecting these regions. Ella lies about 90 kilometers northeast, while the southern beaches around Tangalle are roughly 80 kilometers south. The drive from Colombo takes approximately 4-5 hours.
