About
Nuwara Eliya sits at 1,868 meters elevation in Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands. The British developed the area in the 19th century as a hill station retreat from the heat of the lowlands. That colonial history is still evident in the architecture, with red-brick post offices, mock-Tudor hotels, and the overall layout of the town center.
The elevation creates a climate unlike anywhere else in Sri Lanka. Temperatures regularly drop below 15°C, and nighttime temperatures can go down to around 5-10°C, especially from December to February. This cool weather allows for the cultivation of vegetables not commonly grown elsewhere on the island—strawberries, carrots, leeks, and cabbages are all farmed in the area.
Tea is the dominant agricultural product around Nuwara Eliya. The region produces some of Ceylon tea’s most prized varieties, particularly the high-grown teas known for their delicate flavor. Estates blanket the hillsides, and the industry remains a major employer in the area.
The town experiences peak tourist seasons around April (during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year) and again from July to August. During these times, accommodation prices increase and attractions get crowded with both foreign and local visitors. The period from December to March generally offers the most pleasant weather, though this also coincides with higher visitor numbers.
Nuwara Eliya’s location makes it a natural stop on the route between Kandy and Ella or other hill country destinations. Many travelers include it as part of a tour covering the Cultural Triangle, central highlands, and southern coast. The train journey from Kandy through Nuwara Eliya to Ella is particularly scenic, passing through tea estates, mountains, and small villages.
Planing Your Visit
The town itself can be covered in a day, but most visitors stay two to three nights to explore surrounding attractions. Horton Plains requires an early start and takes most of a day. Tea estate tours typically last 1-2 hours, and you can visit multiple estates if tea is a particular interest.
Having private transport makes visiting the area more practical, especially for reaching places like Horton Plains, Ambewela Farm, and Moon Plains. Leopard Ceylon can organize vehicles and drivers familiar with the hill country roads and attractions. We can plan your route through the highlands, coordinate accommodation, and arrange day trips from Nuwara Eliya to fit your schedule.
