Kandy sits in Sri Lanka’s Central Province, about 115 kilometers from Colombo. The city served as the capital of the last independent kingdom in Sri Lanka before falling to the British in 1815. That history is still visible in the royal palace complex and the many temples scattered throughout the area.
The city sits at about 500 meters elevation, giving it a slightly cooler climate than the coast. Hills surround the city on all sides, and much of the area is covered in tea plantations that start just outside the urban center. The Mahaweli River, Sri Lanka’s longest, runs through the region.
Beyond the main cultural sites, Kandy serves as a base for exploring the surrounding hill country. Tea estates offer tours and tastings, while villages in the nearby mountains give you a look at rural Sri Lankan life. The area also has several spice gardens where you can learn about the cultivation and uses of various spices.
The city itself has both old and new sections. The area around the lake retains much of its historic character, while newer developments spread into the hills. Markets near the center sell everything from fresh produce to textiles, and the shopping district has both local shops and more modern stores.

Most travelers spend two to three days in Kandy, though you could see the main sites in less time if you’re on a tight schedule. The city works well as part of a larger Sri Lanka tour, often combined with visits to Sigiriya and the Cultural Triangle to the north, or the tea country and hill stations to the south.
