Galle sits on Sri Lanka’s southern coast, about two hours’ drive from Colombo. The city grew around its natural harbor and became an important trading port under Portuguese, Dutch, and British rule. Today, the fort area is the main attraction, but the surrounding beaches and cultural sites give you plenty of reasons to stay longer than a day trip. The fort itself covers about 36 hectares and is still a living neighborhood. People live and work inside the walls, so you’ll see local residents going about their daily routines alongside the tourist shops and hotels. Walking the ramparts gives you views over both the old town and the Indian Ocean. Outside the fort, the beach towns of Unawatuna and Thalpe offer different experiences. Unawatuna is busier with more restaurants and water sports operators. Thalpe and the smaller beaches are quieter and attract visitors looking for a more laid-back stay. The ocean conditions vary by season—November to April generally brings calmer seas, while the southwest monsoon affects the coast from May to October. Galle also has an active arts community. Several galleries operate in the fort, and there’s a literary festival held here each January. The Sunday market near the fort entrance sells everything from spices to clothing, and the fish market closer to the harbor opens early each morning.
