About

Pasikudah sits on Sri Lanka’s east coast in Batticaloa District. The area remained largely undeveloped until after 2009 when the civil conflict ended and access to the east coast improved. Since then, Pasikudah has seen significant tourism development, particularly large resort hotels attracted by the unique beach conditions. The shallow bay that makes Pasikudah distinctive is formed by an offshore reef that creates a protected lagoon. This reef keeps the water calm and accumulates fine sand that forms the beach. The same feature that makes the beach safe for swimming also limits water sports that require deeper water or waves—surfing, for example, doesn’t work here. The best weather at Pasikudah occurs from April to October when the east coast experiences its dry season. During this period, rainfall is minimal and the ocean remains calm and clear. The northeast monsoon affects the area from November to March, bringing more rain and occasionally rougher seas, though the bay’s protection means conditions are still swimmable much of the time. Unlike some beach destinations, Pasikudah is predominantly a resort area rather than a traditional fishing village. The local economy now centers heavily on tourism. The nearby town of Kalkudah has more traditional elements with local markets and residential areas, but Pasikudah itself is essentially a tourism zone. The area around Pasikudah saw significant damage during the 2004 tsunami and also experienced effects from the civil conflict. Recovery has been substantial, though the coast still shows signs of both events in certain areas. The recent development represents a significant investment in the region’s future.
