About

Bentota sits on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast, about 65 kilometers south of Colombo. The area developed as a beach resort in the 1960s and remains one of the more established coastal destinations on the island. The town is actually split by the Bentota River, with most of the tourist infrastructure on the southern side. The beach benefits from the shape of the bay, which provides some shelter from strong currents. During the southwest monsoon (roughly May to September), seas can be rougher with larger waves. The November to April period generally offers the calmest conditions for swimming and water sports. Unlike some of the smaller beach towns along the coast, Bentota has a range of accommodation from large resort hotels to smaller guesthouses. The area attracted investment early in Sri Lanka’s tourism development, and you’ll see that reflected in the established hotels and facilities. Many properties date back several decades, though renovations have kept them current. Bentota works well for visitors who want a base for exploring the southwest coast. Galle and its fort are about an hour south. The inland areas contain spice gardens, rubber plantations, and traditional villages. Hikkaduwa, known for its coral reefs and dive sites, is a 30-minute drive north. The town itself has a small commercial area with shops, restaurants, and the train station. The main Colombo-Galle highway runs through Bentota, making access straightforward. The train journey along the coast offers good views and stops at most major beach towns.

Planing Your Visit

Most travelers spend 2-4 days in Bentota, using it as a beach break during a longer Sri Lanka tour. The area can be visited as a day trip from Colombo, though staying overnight gives you more time to explore both the beach and inland attractions.
