About
Arugam Bay sits on Sri Lanka’s southeast coast in Ampara District. The area remained relatively isolated until the coastal road improved in the 1990s, allowing easier access. Even with increased tourism, particularly from the surfing community, Arugam Bay maintains a relaxed atmosphere compared to southern or western beach towns.
The surf season runs roughly from April through October when the east coast receives swell from the southwest monsoon. During this period, Arugam Bay fills with surfers from around the world. The off-season (November to March) sees much lighter crowds and some businesses close, though the bay is still pleasant for swimming and the weather remains warm.
The town itself is small—essentially a main road running parallel to the beach with guesthouses, restaurants, surf shops, and small stores. Most buildings are low-rise and the overall vibe is casual. Accommodation ranges from basic rooms to more comfortable beachfront hotels. The restaurant scene caters to international visitors with Western food options alongside Sri Lankan dishes.
The area around Arugam Bay saw significant damage during the 2004 tsunami, which affected much of the east coast. The town has since rebuilt, and most structures now sit further back from the shoreline. The local population includes both Sinhalese and Tamil communities, and you’ll hear both languages spoken.
Outside of surf season, Arugam Bay offers a quiet escape. The beaches are nearly empty, prices drop, and the pace slows down. If you’re not here specifically for surfing, this period might actually be preferable. The swimming conditions are generally better as the ocean is calmer without the big swells.
Planing Your Visit
Arugam Bay sits about 320 kilometers from Colombo. The drive takes roughly 7-8 hours depending on route and stops. The coastal road from the south passes through Tangalle and Hambantota. An inland route through Wellawaya is faster but less scenic. Some travelers combine Arugam Bay with visits to Ella or Yala National Park, both within a few hours’ drive.
