About
Ella is a small town in the Badulla District, sitting at about 1,040 meters elevation. The area’s elevation gives it a cooler climate compared to the lowlands, though it’s not as cool as higher hill stations like Nuwara Eliya. Tea plantations cover much of the surrounding landscape, with some estates dating back to the British colonial period.
The town itself is small—you can walk from one end to the other in about 15 minutes. Most guesthouses, restaurants, and shops line the main road. Despite its size, Ella has developed a solid tourism infrastructure over the past decade, with accommodation options ranging from basic hostels to upscale boutique hotels.
One of Ella’s main advantages is its location. It works as a good base for exploring the surrounding area, including day trips to Haputale, Bandarawela, and even Horton Plains National Park (though that’s a fairly long day trip). The town is also a stop on the main railway line from Colombo to Badulla, with the section from Kandy to Ella considered one of the most scenic train rides in the country.
The atmosphere in Ella leans toward the backpacker and mid-range traveler crowd, though there are higher-end options available. Restaurants serve a mix of Sri Lankan food, international dishes, and Western comfort food. The town has a laid-back feel, and many visitors end up staying longer than initially planned.
Planing Your Visit
